Bespoke ERP & operations systems

Bespoke ERP for job-by-job UK businesses, owned outright.

Built by THEY.dev, the implementation team specialising in OpenMercato. We build bespoke ERP and operations systems for businesses that run job by job, from first enquiry to paid invoice. Built for the way you actually work, not the way the software wants you to.

Yours
The problem, told once

Your business is bespoke. Every job is different. And you are running it on spreadsheets and tools that almost fit.

Off the shelf software gets you most of the way, then taxes you per seat for the privilege and never quite matches how you work. So you reconcile the gaps by hand, in spreadsheets and email, on software you will never own.

  1. Every order is quoted from scratch

No two jobs are the same, so the numbers live in spreadsheets that only one person fully understands.

  2. The work runs on email and memory

Files, approvals and the current state of a job are scattered across inboxes, with no single place that shows the whole picture.

  3. You rent software you will never own

Per seat pricing punishes you for growing the team, and the moment you stop paying, you lose access to your own way of working.

Where we go deep

We know a few worlds inside out. Yours is likely one.

We do not build for everyone. We build for businesses that run job by job, and we know the detail of these worlds well enough to speak your language from day one. If yours is not named here, the same approach still fits, because the system is built around you either way.

One platform, configured around how you actually run - whether you make things, build things, or let them. Customers, suppliers, stock, sites and tenancies in one ERP.
Why it is low risk

A considered purchase, with the risk taken out.

Fixed price, fixed scope

Both agreed in writing before we start, so there are no surprises and no open ended bills.

You own the system and the data

It runs on your own servers. The system and everything in it belong to you, not to us.

No seat fees, ever

Add as many people as you like. The price does not go up because your team grew.

No lock in

It is yours to keep, host and extend. Take it to another developer whenever you choose.

Hosting your way

Own your servers, without running them yourself.

"On your own servers" sounds like a problem if it means you also have to staff a sysadmin. It doesn't. Pick the level of hands-on you want; the system is yours either way.

Most popular

Managed by us

We provision and run the infrastructure in your name on Hetzner, AWS or another cloud you choose. You own the account; we keep the lights on.

  • Monitoring, backups, patching included
  • Incident response within SLA
  • Starts from a small monthly fee, depends on load
Bring your own cloud

Client-owned cloud

Runs in your own AWS, Azure or GCP account. Your billing, your IAM, your data residency. We deploy and maintain it under a support agreement.

  • Infrastructure-as-code in your repo
  • Your security and compliance posture
  • Hosting cost direct from your provider
Full handover

Fully self-hosted

Your own on-prem hardware or a VPS you already pay for. We deploy, document and hand over. You take it from there, or call us in when you need us.

  • No ongoing fee to us
  • Runbooks for backup, restore and upgrade
  • Ad-hoc support available on day rate
What's in the price

Start free. Decide later.

You don't have to commit to a full build to find out if this is right for you. Start with a free workshop, go deeper with a paid Discovery for £900, and only then decide on the full build at around £20k.

Free workshop£0 · 60-90 min
  • Remote session, no obligation, no pitch
  • We walk through how your business runs today
  • You leave with a shortlist of where an ERP would actually pay back
  • An honest answer on whether OpenMercato is the right fit at all

Discovery£900 · 2 weeks
  • Paid, two weeks, fixed price
  • Interviews, current-state map, fit-gap against OpenMercato
  • You walk away with a written scope, fixed price and timeline
  • Fully refundable against the build if you proceed with us
  • No obligation to continue past discovery
In scope at ~£20kfull build
  • Process mapping and fit-gap analysis against OpenMercato
  • Build of the agreed scope, on the OpenMercato base
  • Data migration from one source system (CSV / SQL / SaaS export)
  • One live training session, plus recorded walkthroughs
  • Go-live support window (4 weeks after launch)
  • Source repo, infra-as-code, runbooks handed over to you
  • Discovery fee refunded if you came in through Discovery
What moves the pricescope drivers
  • Number of distinct user roles and permission rules
  • Number of integrations (Xero, Stripe, couriers, Companies House...)
  • Number and shape of data sources to migrate

  • Regulated workflows (CIS, AML, right-to-rent, audit trails)
  • Multi-branch, multi-currency or multi-entity setups
Who builds it

Founder led, production grade software.

One person who designs and builds the system is the same person you talk to. No account managers, no handovers, no team you never meet. You work directly with the engineer who understands your business.

It is real, production grade software, built to run a business day in and day out, not a prototype dressed up for a demo.

Built on the proven OpenMercato foundation

A mature open source base that has been hardened over years. For you that means a lower cost to build and no vendor holding the keys, on a platform that is yours to keep.

And after launch, you are not on your own. Founder-led does not mean one person disappearing the day go-live ends. Backups, security updates, incident response and a clear SLA are part of how we run.

Backups & disaster recovery

Nightly off-site backups, encrypted at rest. Restore drill documented and rehearsed before go-live, not after the first incident.

Maintenance & security updates

Monthly patch window for the OpenMercato base, dependencies and OS. Security advisories tracked, critical fixes shipped out of band.

Support SLA

Business-hour response for normal issues, faster windows for anything that stops you trading. On-call available as an optional retainer.

Handover-ready

Full source, infra-as-code, runbooks and an architecture map. You can take it to another developer at any time, with no rebuild needed.

Who we are

THEY.dev, the OpenMercato implementation team.

So you know exactly who you are hiring, and what you are buying. A .dev domain can look like an unofficial fork. It isn't. We are the team that implements OpenMercato for UK businesses.

Us — your build partner

THEY.dev

A UK-based software house. openmercato.dev is our practice for ERP builds on the OpenMercato platform. You hire us, we run discovery, deliver the build, migrate your data, train your team, host it if you want us to, and support it after launch.

  • Discovery, build and data migration
  • Training, go-live and ongoing support
  • Optional managed hosting and SLA
The platform we build on

OpenMercato

Start with 80% done. OpenMercato gives you 80% of the ERP out of the box. We build the 20% that makes it yours.

An open source ERP foundation that has been hardened over years. Vendor-neutral. No per-seat licensing. You get the platform's longevity and community without being tied to any one vendor, including us.

  • Open source core, owned by the community
  • No per-seat licensing on the platform itself
  • Any developer can pick it up after us
How we work

From first call to live ERP, in a process you can plan around.

An ERP rollout is not a single sprint. It is a sequence of agreed steps with clear exits, so you always know where you stand and what you are signing off.

  1. 01

    Discovery

Interviews, current-state map, pain list. 2 weeks.

  2. 02

    Process mapping

How your business actually runs today, written down end-to-end. ~1 week.

  3. 03

    Fit-gap on OpenMercato

What the platform covers as-is, what needs custom work, what stays manual. ~1 week.

  4. 04

    Proof of concept

The risky parts built first, in your environment, signed off before full build. 1-2 weeks.

  5. 05

    Implementation

The agreed scope built, demoed every fortnight. Typically 6-10 weeks.

  6. 06

    Data migration

From your source system into OpenMercato, with a sign-off pass on a sample. ~2 weeks.

  7. 07

    Training & go-live

One live session, recorded walkthroughs, written runbook. Cut-over on an agreed date.

  8. 08

    Support

4 weeks included after go-live. Optional retainer beyond, or pick a hosting tier.

Why not just buy an off the shelf tool

The honest comparison.

Off the shelf tools are good at what they do. The question is whether they fit a business that runs job by job, and what you are left holding at the end.

The subscription

A tool you rent forever

Quick to start, then a monthly bill that never ends and rises every time you add a person.

  • Per seat pricing that punishes growth
  • Stop paying and you lose access
  • You bend to fit the software
openmercato.dev The middle ground

A system that fits, that you own

Built around your business at a fixed price, running on your servers, yours to keep for good.

  • One fixed price, no seat fees
  • You own the system and the data
  • Built around how you work
The enterprise platform

A platform that is overkill

Powerful and endless, but heavy to set up, costly to run and far more than a focused business needs.

  • Long, expensive implementations
  • Consultants to keep it running
  • Features you will never use

Questions

The things owners ask us first.

If your situation is not here, a short call is the quickest way to get a straight answer.

Book a 30 minute call

Yes. Common integrations we ship today include Xero, Stripe, GoCardless, Royal Mail and major couriers, and Companies House. New ones are scoped, priced and built in. We build around the tools you already rely on rather than asking you to throw everything out.

We have moved customers off Zoho, HR Partner, Sage, spreadsheets and bespoke Access databases. One source system is included in the price; more are quoted on. Dirty data is normal; we clean what we can, surface what we can't, and you sign off on a sample before cut-over.

Your data lives where you choose: managed by us, in your own cloud, or fully self-hosted. Role-based access, an audit log of who did what, encrypted at rest, encrypted backups. We sign a DPA where one is needed.

You do. The OpenMercato base is open source under its existing licence. Our custom work on top is delivered to you under a permissive licence, in a repo you control. No source escrow needed; the source is yours from day one.

4 weeks of go-live support are included. After that, you can take an ongoing retainer with defined response times for normal vs. business-critical issues, or pay ad-hoc on day rate. You are never obligated to keep us on.

One live training session (remote or on-site as an add-on), recorded walkthroughs for every core flow, and a written runbook your team can search. Refresher sessions available when you onboard new people.

Change requests are written up with a fixed price or day-rate estimate before any work starts. You decide whether it goes in now, after launch, or not at all. No surprise invoices.

Depends on the option you pick (see the hosting section). Managed by us starts from a small monthly fee and scales with load. Client-owned cloud is whatever your provider charges. Fully self-hosted has no ongoing fee to us.

That is exactly the point. The system is built around how you run, not the other way around. The more particular your way of working, the more there is to gain from a system shaped to fit it.

Most builds run over a small number of months from a scope we agree together up front. See the "How we work" section for the full sequence. You will have a clear timeline before any money changes hands.

You get full source, infra-as-code and runbooks. Any developer who knows the OpenMercato platform can pick it up. We are happy to do a paid handover session with your new team and step away cleanly.
